The customer's plan
The customer wanted to replace the existing patio and make it much larger, creating a more useful area for sitting and enjoying the garden. She also wanted raised planting beds around the boundaries to make the space easier to look after.
There was a clear design from the beginning. As the work progressed, we kept talking through the details and agreed several changes that improved the original vision.
Before and after
Matching photographs show the difference clearly, from the original small patio and hedge-lined garden to the finished paving, lawn and raised beds.
The small original paved area was replaced with a generous Indian sandstone patio across the top of the garden.

The new paving, Cotswold stone edging and clear step down to the lawn give the upper garden a stronger structure.

The hedge and loose borders were replaced with secure treated-sleeper beds ready for the customer to plant.

Start to finish
Restricted access and the gradient meant that every part of the excavation and preparation had to be completed by hand.
We removed the original patio, dug up the upper garden and took out the boundary hedges and stubborn roots.
The ground was excavated and levelled to create a secure base for the new patio, steps and raised beds.
A much larger Indian sandstone patio was laid across the top of the garden to create a practical seating area.
Both sets of steps from the house were rebuilt, together with a new step leading naturally from the patio to the lawn.
Treated sleepers were used around the boundaries, including an additional sleeper to support the existing shed base.
Fresh turf and Cotswold stone borders completed the clean, practical layout and tied the different levels together.
Working with the site
Access and the garden gradient ruled out bringing machinery through. Soil, old paving, roots and base materials all had to be dug, moved and prepared by hand. The job took around 14 days, with the weather deciding how long we could work on several of them.
A practical solution
We uncovered unwanted concrete overspill from a neighbouring extension. After breaking out what was needed, we finished the awkward area with a sleeper-style bench. It concealed the remaining section, kept the garden tidy and added another useful feature.
These genuine progress photographs show the work behind the finished result, from hand-dug clearance and Type 1 preparation through to paving, timber work, turf and the final buff pointing.

The finished garden
The customer was very happy with the completed garden. We are especially proud of the patio and how all of the steps turned out, including the new step from the patio down to the grass.

A few weeks later
These follow-up photographs show how well the fresh turf has taken across the relevelled grass area. It has established into a healthy green lawn, neatly framed by the raised sleeper beds, paving and Cotswold stone borders.

Customer feedback
I am absolutely delighted with how the patio has turned out. It’s completely transformed the garden and has given me a lovely space that feels both smart and welcoming.
The natural stone looks fantastic, and the attention to detail in the layout and finishing touches really shows. Everything has been done to such a high standard, and the finished patio and raised flower beds look even better than I imagined.
The whole area now feels like an extension of my home, and I’m really looking forward to enjoying it. Liam and Glen are hard workers and offer their own suggestions in order to get a better finish. Couldn’t be happier with the results.
